It’s with a mixture of sadness and acceptance that our family shares the news that my mother, Violet Day has passed. She was 93 years old, and left this world on Thursday, Feb. 6 surrounded by her family.
My mother and father dreamed of starting a business together.. Together, Vi and Bill, as they were affectionately known to all, launched The Christmas Dove in 1969, renting two rooms in The Enchanted Doll House, a former gift shop in nearby Manchester. In 1972, they moved the shop to its present location in Sunderland, following the construction of the new building where we’ve been ever since. The name of the shop was changed to Christmas Days in 1983.
A mother, a grandmother, a great-grandmother and a mother-in-law were all titles she carried, along with shop owner and active community citizen. Her greatest joy was her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Her impact and influence on the shop, the people she knew and her extended family will be a lasting legacy.
We will miss Vi greatly, but take comfort that her passing was a peaceful one and came after a long and joyful life. Right to the end, she shared her passion for drawing along with other interests. Many of you will remember Vi behind our ribbon counter, where she enjoyed creating artful bows and other decorations. Her spirit and legacy will remain with us forever.
One of her opening lines when I visited her was “how’s the shop doing”. She was always touched that so many of her customers asked about her.
